PREFACE.
This volume contains the Marriage Registers of seven parishes, counting Fuggleston with Bemerton as one; four of them going back into the sixteenth century. These four are Bratton, which begins in 1542; Boyton, in 1560; Kington St. Michael, in 1563; and Latton, in 1578; lying in widely dispersed parts of the county, from the North-Eastern boundary to well over towards the South-Western. It may be observed as an interesting coincidence that at Eisey, which is now joined to Latton, the Register begins in 1575, and that in the adjoining parish of Castle Eaton it is still older, beginning in 1549.
Of the later Registers, Fuggleston with Bemerton begins in 1608, Collingbourne Ducis in 1654, and Sherrington in 1677. A sentimental interest attaches to Fuggleston with Bemerton in consequence of the connection of George Herbert with the latter ; during that short period the Register seems to be com- plete, but speaking generally it is very faulty ; there are serious gaps ; in one place it has apparently been deliberately mutilated ; and the writing is in many parts lamentably bad and illiterate.
In the next volume it is proposed to commence the Marriage Register of St. Edmund’s, Salisbury. This important parish has a practically complete Register for over three hundred and fifty years — from 1st January, 1559-60 ; which will be found to be full of interest. The Marriage Registers of Salisbury will then be complete.
The Editors desire to offer their thanks to the clergy of the parishes who have kindly given facilities for making these transcripts; to the Rev. J. E. Gofton, who, in addition, tran- scribed the Marriage Register of Bratton ; to the Rev. F. P. Synge, who completed the transcript of Kington St. Michael, which was begun by the late Rev. A. H. W. Adrian, D.D. ; to the Rev. W. Symonds for the transcript of Fuggleston with

Bemerton ; to Mr. J. J. Hammond for those of Boyton and Sherrington ; to Mr. A. H. W. Fynmore for that of Latton ; and to the Rev. R. Grosvenor Bartelot and the Rev. G. F. Tanner who respectively began and finished that of Collingbourne Ducis.
The Editors will be grateful for similar help from any clergy- men whose Registers have not yet been copied, or from anyone else who will kindly undertake the task with the necessary permission of the clergyman of the parish. It is only by such help that it is possible to carry on the work, which probably everyone with any knowledge of these valuable records considers necessary for the preservation of the information they contain.
It is advisable to repeat the warning that these transcripts are not to be looked upon as “evidence” in the legal acceptation of the term ; where such “evidence” is desired application must be made to the clergy in whose custody the Registers are.

Note. — These Marriages are contained in seven volumes, all of them in a good state of preservation. The first five are of parch- ment, and contain entries of Baptisms and Burials as well as Marriages ; the last two are of paper and contain entries of Marriages only.
Volume I commences in 1542, but there is no Marriage entered until 1544; it ends in December 1681.

At the beginning of Volume I is a heading: — “The names of all such which have been married within the Church of Little Stoke aforesaid since the first of January a. d. 1542.” According to Hoare’s Hundred of Westbiiryy p. 57, there were three tithings
in Bratton, viz.: “Millbourn Bratton and Stoke
is in Bratton, where the Church now stands.” And in a Will dated 1 558, printed in Wilts Notes and Queries , vol. iii, p. 206, the testator expresses a wish to be buried in the churchyard of his “parrishe churche of litell Stoke in Bratton”. It seems fair to assume therefore that Bratton Church was once called Little Stoke, though it does not appear when the name was changed. These transcripts have been made and collated with the Registers by the Rev. J. E. Gofton, Vicar of Bratton, and are printed with his permission.

Marriages at Kington St. Michael,
1563 to 1837.
Note. — The Marriages here prior to 1 July 1837 are contained in eight volumes.
Volume I begins in 1563 and ends in 1639.
Volume II begins in 1640 and ends in 1661.
Volume III begins in 1663 and ends in 1691. These three volumes contain entries of Baptism and Burial as well as Marriage.
Volume IV begins in 1692. The Baptisms and Burials are entered until 1790; but the Marriages cease in 1754.
Volume V and the remaining volumes in this list contain Marriages only. The dates of commencement and ending are, respectively ; for this volume, 1754 and 1768 ;
Volume VI, 1769 and 1801 ;
Volume VII, 1801 and 1812; and
Volume VIII, 1813 and 1837.
These transcripts, which have been collated with the Registers, were commenced by the late Dr. A. H. W. Adrian, and completed by the Rev. F. P. Synge, the present Vicar of Kington St. Michael, by whose permission they are printed.

Marriages at Fuggleston St. Peter with Bemerton,
1608 to 1837.
Note. — The memory of George Herbert clings to Bemerton, where the poet-priest prayed and sang and strewed the little church with rushes, where he built his pleasant parsonage, and laid out his garden by the river-side. The book is still extant in which he caused the Christenings and the Marriages to be recorded, and where, among the Burials, the close of his too short life is written. The Register Book, which was sometimes in his hands, chronicles the Baptisms and Burials, 1568-1654, and the Marriages, 1608- 1635, at both his churches, Fuggleston and Bemerton, but some ruthless hand has torn away the last page where the other weddings were set down.
Fuggleston has its own separate register from 1654, and Bemerton from 1656. There is a terrible gap in the Bemerton Marriages, 1636-1671, and, while all marriage entries are entirely wanting from 1568 to 1607 for both places, the Fuggleston Register is de- ficient in that respect, 1636-1654, 1672-1674, and 1748-1755. Un- fortunately the Bishop’s Transcripts fail to supply a single entry of the missing Marriages. The few additional particulars which they contain are printed within brackets and distinguished by an asterisk.
The Marriage entries before 1813 have been transcribed (and col- lated with the few extant Transcripts in the Diocesan Registry) by the Rev. W. Symonds, M.A., Chaplain of Chavenage, Glouc. ; the continuation to 1837 by Mr. T. H. Baker; and are printed with the sanction of the Rev. Canon Warre, Rector of Fuggleston with Bemerton.
